Birger Jarl

Birger Jarl (born in 1210 and dead the October 21st 1266), of its complete name Birger Magnusson de Bjälbo , was a statesman Swedish which founded the town of Stockholm. It belongs to the family of Folkungiens.
Biography
He marries Ingeburge, sister of the king Eric the Stammerer, saves the town of Lübeck, besieged by the Danish (1236). He organizes in 1240 a military forwarding against Novgorod, where he is overcome by Alexandre Nevski on the edges of the Neva. He is high in 1248 with the row of Jarl (Scandinavian honorary title appointing the chief of a territory on behalf of the king) by the king Erik XI.
In 1249, it carries out a forwarding until in Finland, posing the bases of the Swedish empire. It subjects Finland whose piracies afflicted Sweden, and there introduced the Christianisme. With died of the king in 1250, his/her son Valdemar is elected king. Birger is then Régent during six years during which Sweden thrives. In 1252 it founds the town of Stockholm which it will contribute to develop while signing of the trade agreements with the town of Lübeck.
His wife dies in 1254, and it remarie in 1261 with the widow of the king Abel of Denmark.
