Bir-Hakeim maquis

Maquis Bir-Hakeim : group resistant French born during the Second world war.
Created during the summer 1942, by the commander Rigal, chief of the Secret Armed with Toulouse and Jean Capel who belonged to the movement Combat, it was joined by Coucy, a teacher of Montpellier to the disappearance of Rigal.
In March 1943, Jean Capel estimates that propaganda is not enough any more and with the Marcel brothers and Christian of Roquemaurel, it sets up a first group of men of the maquis with young students resulting from Toulouse, Spanish workmen and employees and republicans. This group settled initially in the area of Villefranche de Rouergue before leaving to Douch, in the Herault where it delivered one of the first important combat of Resistance. It deployed then its activity in Ardèche, Gard and Lozere. It was joined by the members of a maquis of German antifascists, directed by the Communist Otto Kühne. It undergoes a fatal attack with the Parade the May 28th 1944 which made more than 60 dead, before taking part in the combat of the Release.

Monument
- a monument was set up in 1984 on the commune of Mourèze (Herault) to the memory of the 105 martyrs of the maquis.
