Bir-Hakeim (subway of Paris)

Bir-Hakeim is a station of the Métro of Paris on the line 6, located in the 15 {{E}} district of Paris.

The station

Situation

It is an air station, located in axis of the Boulevard of Grenelle side left bank of the Pont of Bir-Hakeim above which the line passes.

Origin of the name

Comes from the bridge of Bir-Hakeim, which is registered with the additional Inventory of the historic buildings.

Its name commemorates the Bataille of Bir-Hakeim. A commemorative panel is located at the entry of the quay Nation direction.

History

The station is open the April 24th 1906 under the name of Grenelle (of the name of the district and the boulevard éponymes). It takes the name of Bir-Hakeim - Grenelle the June 18th 1949.

The August 12th 2007, the Italian journalist Sergio Vantaggiato there is attacked by two pickpockets and dies of its wounds.

In the vicinity

It is the subway station nearest to the Eiffel Tower and thus is very attended by the tourists of the capital.

With its proximity rose the Vel' d' Hiv , the cycle-racing track of winter famous for its cycle races but also place of the first detention of 13  000 Jews raids in the capital the July 16th 1942 before their deportation. The cycle-racing track was destroyed in 1960 during installations of the Front of the Seine. A memorial is set up in the vicinity (southern) of the station, above the railway of the line C of the RER.
