Biphenyl

The biphenyl (also named 1,1-biphenyl, diphenyl and phenylbenzene) is a aromatic Hydrocarbure of empirical formula C12H10. It is appeared as a colorless crystalline solid. It is amongst other things used like Conservateur (E230) to avoid the formation of Moisissure S.

Properties

Biphenyl with the shape of a crystal shining energy of colorless with the yellow. It has a characteristic odor. It is insoluble in water but is solubilized nevertheless slightly in non-polar organic solvents like the ether of oil or the Toluène. It is rather not very reactive. Its Point flash is approximately 113 °C and its Point of spontaneous combustion of approximately 540 °C.

Manufacture

The biphenyl is obtained starting from oils of distillation of the Coaltar.

Use

The biphenyl is used as conservative (E 230, generally in combination with the orthophénylephénol E 231 and the Imazalil) on the skins of citrus fruits to prevent the growth of the moulds. The skins thus treated are not nevertheless consumable any more.

It is also employed like Biocide. Moreover biphenyl is used for the manufacture of medicinal products and Polychloro-biphenyl S (PCB).

The biphenyl is the basic commodity of the first commercial Liquid crystals (cyanobiphényle), which at the beginning of the Années 1970 were employed in the digital watches and the computers.

Because of its temperature of decomposition raised with the air, the biphenyl gets busy like coolant for example in the thermal power stations.

Dangers

The biphenyl is irritating for the skin, the eyes and the respiratory tracts. Moreover it is harmful for the environment.
