Biographical dictionary of the French labor movement

The biographical Dictionary of the labor movement French , more commonly called " Maitron " , of the name of its founder, and sometimes designated by the initials DBMOF , is a monumental work being composed of 44 volumes published between 1964 and 1997 under the direction of Jean Maitron (deceased in 1987) then of Claude Pennetier. A cédérom taking again and enriching totality by work was born in 1997. Parallel to this vast company, several volumes were published within the framework of a biographical Dictionnaire of the international labor movement , for which it is advisable to add several dictionaries sets of themes.

As of the completion of the project, a new series of the dictionary was put in building site under the direction of Claude Pennetier, carrying this time over the period 1940-1968. The first two volumes (on the twelve envisaged) were published in 2006 pennies the title: biographical Dictionary, labor movement, social movement .

There exists a Association of the friends of Maitron being given for goal to develop " Maitron " in France like abroad.

Genesis of the project

It is into 1955 that comes to Jean Maitron, confronted with the chronic request for information on the observers of the history which were the elected officials, the intellectuals and the militants of the Labor movement, the idea of this dictionary. In 1958, it launches a call to contribution in the Actualité of the history , re-examined French Institut of social history (IFHS). The mobilization of a great number of researchers and the progressive recognition of the dictionary allowed the opening of inaccessible files, in particular those of the police headquarter.

DBMOF with DBMOMS

The operational startup of a fifth period of the " Maitron" , energy of the Occupation with Mai  68, required the taking into account of new forms of militancy exceeding the framework of the labor movement. From where adoption of a new title: biographical Dictionary, labor movement, social movement ( DBMOMS ). But DBMOF , DBMOI , dictionaries sets of themes and DBMOMS are before all the four components of only one and even together: " Maitron ".

Prosopography and labor movement

With the wire of its realization, Maitron knew a double evolution: the progressive organization of the research task in " corpus" (geographical, organisational…) and the recourse to the numerical support (cédérom). This allowed a considerable development of the uses of the dictionary which constitutes a database today opening the way with many research Prosopographiques applied to the militancy.
