Biocide
The word biocide (étymologiquement: bio + cide = " “ which kills the life ”) designates a broad family of chemical substances which gathers the Pesticide S, and thus the products plant health or phytopharmacological, and antibiotics with medical uses, veterinary surgeons, servants or industrialists, disinfecting them nonagro/food water, air, grounds, swimming pools, surfaces of work, WC, etc
Legal definition
In Europe, the Directive of the the European Parliament and the Council n° 98/8/CE of February 16th, 1998 concerning the marketing of the products biocides (OJ of the European Communities n° L 123 of April 24th, 1998) defines them as follows:-
products biocides are “ substances active and preparations containing one or more substances active which is presented in the form in which they are delivered to the user, which are intended to destroy, push back or make inoffensive the harmful organizations, to prevent the action or to fight them of it in any other manner, by a chemical action or biological ”.

the directive presents in its appendix V a “ exhaustive list of the twenty-three types of products, including/understanding an indicative series of descriptions for each type”

the directive envisages a under-definition of the “ produces biocide at the weak risk” which is “ a product biocide which does not contain as active substances only one or more substances enumerated with the appendix I has and which does not contain any alarming substance. Under the conditions of use, this product biocide presents only one weak risk them being human, the animals and the environment; ”

For the directive, a alarming substance is “ Any substance, other that the substance activates, intrinsically able to cause a harmful effect for the man, the animals or the environment, and who is contained or produced in a product biocide with a sufficient concentration to cause such an effect.
- Such a substance, except if there exist other reasons for concern, would be normally classified like dangerous substance under the terms of the directive 67/548/CE of the Council of June 27th, 1967 concerning the bringing together of the legislative measures, lawful and administrative relating to classification, the packing and the labelling of the dangerous substances (39) and contained in the product biocide with a concentration such as this one must be regarded as dangerous within the meaning of article 3 of the directive 88/379/CEE of the Council of June 7th, 1988 concerning the bringing together of the legislative measures, lawful and administrative of the Member States relating to classification, the packing and the labelling of the dangerous preparations
” (40);
Use
These products are generally marketed to fight against of pathogenic and nondesired micro-organisms. If the word is used as qualifier, a widened definition includes for example the microwaves, UV, X-rays or the heating which one will say that they have a biocide effect.Example: ozone, the bleach or the chlorine dioxide powerful disinfecting are used in the treatment of drinking water, cooling or washing in food industry. They are not pesticides nor the plant health ones, but of biocides, just as various antifongic (organomercuriels formerly, prohibited today) and antibactériens used for the conservation of the paper pulp (example: benzothiazoled based)
The biocides are subjected to regulation, and in particular to an European directive for the Member States of the European Union.
