History

fixed Well on mountainside , Saint Andre was, before 1806 well-known a stage city on the road connecting the Piedmont (Turin) and the Savoy (Chambéry) by the Col of the Mount Cenis.

Inns, hotels, relays of station and hospital accommodated people famous, pilgrims, hawkers and poor. But its geographical location made of it as a natural bolt of the valley of the Maurienne as the armies in Guerre disputed:

  • 1536 : plundering and fire at the time of the occupation by the troops of François I {{er}}

  • 1597: Battle between the Piedmontese and French troops. The powder stored in the church explodes: it will be rebuilt in 1603
  • 1703 -13: Not less than 6 military occupations and requisitions, by the troops of the King de Sardaigne and those of Louis XIV.
  • 1743 : Spanish occupation and battles with the Piedmontese troops close to Villard (place known as of the commune of Saint-Andrew).
  • 1792 : Occupation by the troops Revolution naires.
  • 1814 -15: Occupation by the Austrian troops.
  • 1940 -44: Occupation by the Italian and German troops. During the bombardments of Modane in 1943 the very beautiful church Baroque of Saint Andre is destroyed.

Rich of its inheritance , often burned and plundered, Saint Andre keeps still alive traces of its past: fountains, banal Furnace, vestiges of the Mill S along the Brook of the Saw.

Testimony of an important religious activity, Saint Andre which was episcopal ground has many monuments:

  • Vault Notre Dame of Pity at the entry of the village with its frontage decorated with a restored mural.
  • Vault Roch Saint built in 1634.
  • Vault Etienne Saint, with the top of the village, of construction former to the 10th century. Its external stone furnace bridge points out the plague which decimated part of the population in 1630.
  • single Crosses mauriennaises, placed on monolithic supports, near the vaults.

Today village of reception , often occupied by the military troops, Saint Andre however preserves a tradition of reception and the direction of user-friendliness. Peaceful village, in edge of the National park of Vanoise, it can arrive to you as at Chateaubriand formerly remaining at Saint Andre to hear " song of the Nightingale and cry of the eagle crossing the ciel".

If you pass the end of the summer in this village do not leave without to have tasted the plum of Saint Andre. This local variety of brown blonde to the marrowy and scented flesh, easy to stone was re-elected in the country. Formerly, of the inhabitants of high and low Maurienne reserved a long time in advance harvests local producers. Probable fruit of selection by generations of mountain dwellers, this plum belongs to the local inheritance which as the rare species where the historic buildings deserves all our attention.
