Binding (engine)
On a railway wheel of rolling stock for example a Locomotive with vapor, the binding , or tread is the metal layer of wear fixed around the rim of a wheel. Binding is manufactured with an internal diameter slightly lower than the diameter external of the rim. It is assembled after heating, the dilation of binding allowing its assembly, cooling ensures then an assembly indémontable.
A binding carries on its interior side an edge or roll, which by support on the interior edge of the rail makes it possible to guide the vehicle.
This part can break, because of wear, of thermal shocks or a manufacturing defect, causing more or less important damage then (going until the derailment of the train in full speed). This breaking is called rupture of binding . To avoid the loss of the pieces of steel after rupture, bindings are sometimes riveted or fastened
