Texts attest that Bima in the island of Sumbawa is, at least since the 14th century, a relay on the sea route connecting the kingdoms of the west of the archipelago indonésien to the producing Moluques of spices like the clove and the nutmeg.

The Nagarakertagama , poem epic writes in 1365 under the reign of the king Hayam Wuruk (1350-89) of Majapahit in the is of Java, quotes " Bhima" in a list of some hundred " regions tributaires" kingdom. The city is not thus called more Sriwijaya at that time.

Actually, the territory controlled by Majapahit did not extend that on part of the east and center of Java. " regions tributaires" were in fact of the counters forming a sales network whose Majapahit was the center. Majapahit sent to it dignitaries of which the role was to make sure that these counters were not devoted to a private trade which would escape the kingdom.

To the 17th century, Bima is annexed by the Royaume of Gowa in the south of Célèbes. The court of Bima, originating in this area, held during the S a newspaper writes in Malayan, which was the official language and policy of the sultanate.

Linguistics

The language bima belongs to the sub-group known as " bima- sumba " exchange-Eastern group of the branch Austronesian of the Languages austronésiennes. It is thus distinct from the sembawa spoken in the west about Sumbawa.
