Billboard Magazine
Billboard magazine is an American weekly magazine dedicated to the industry of the disc. It maintains several Classement S (in English of the charts ) internationally recognized which reflects each week the success of the music titles and the albums most popular. Its most famous chart is the " Billboard Hot 100 " who classifies the 100 best titles independently of their musical genre. It is frequently quoted like reference to the United States. The Billboard 200 is its during for the sales of albums.
History
Founded in 1894, the Billboard magazine covered in the beginning the Carnaval S, but the place dedicated to the music became such extensive that it specialized in the Années 1950. The first Hit parades was published on January 4th 1936, followed by the Music Popularity Chart (classification of popularity) on July 20th 1940. Since 1958, the classification of the Billboard Hot 100 is calculated according to the sales of individual and the frequency of their passage to the radio.
Radio operator programs
During many years, the weekly emission " American Signal 40 " , animated by Casey Kasem (of 1970 at August 1988, and of 1998 with 2004) and Shadoe Stevens (of August 1988 to February 1994) played in the inverse order the best 40 titles of Billboard. In 2004, Kasem was replaced by the presenter of American Idol, Ryan Seacrest.
A version Country of American Signal 40, called " American Country Countdown " in 1973 was born and is animated by Bob Kingsley.
Billboard today
The magazine covers many fields, sale of DVD to the number of music downloading on Internet. Even if one can find it in bookstore, its principal audience remains the professionals of music industry.
Methodology of the classification
The Billboard magazine uses the system Nielsen Soundscan to classify the individual ones and the albums. In a general way, this system enters the purchases of albums or individual in the stores equipped with the SoundScan system. Another system, named Broadcast Dated Systems (BDS), is also used by Billboard for the radio diffusion. When a radio equipped with system BDS passes a title, it is entered and makes it possible to determine the frequency to which a title is diffused on the waves. On the basis of this information, Billboard establishes its charts weekly, each one having its different specificities and its marking system. That can involve notable differences between the charts: the most famous example is the title " Into The Groove " of Madonna, which was only available into individual 12 inches at the time. He was refused for this reason by the Billboard Hot 100, but was classified in the chart of the individual R&B, which did not have this limitation. For a long time, it was necessary that individual left on the market before being able to appear in a chart of Billboard. Indeed, the SoundScan systems and BDS were not invented yet and the classifications were based on the results of the sales and the reports/ratios of the stations radios. In 1990, the chart Country is the first to use systems SoundScan and BDS, follow-up of Hot 100 and chart R&B in 1991. Today, all the charts of Billboard are based on these systems.
Before September 1995, the classification of individual at the time of their exit was not made that on the basis of their frequency of passage to the radio. This rule then changed and until in 1998 individual was classified only after the first week of sale. That made it possible a title to reach the first place as of its entry in the charts.
The only artist has to have classified his 5 consecutive albums n°1 with the billboard is the rappor DMX.
In December 1998, this rule was modified again to return to old. This decision was made in order to better correpondre with the changes of music industry: indeed, as of the Years 1980, some hits were never published into individual, in the hope to make inflate the sales of the corresponding album. Consequently, these titles never appeared in Hot 100. Among the latter, one finds " All Apologies " of Nirvana, " Lovefool " Cardigans, " Walking one the Sun " of Smash Mouth, " Odd How " by OMC, " Virtual Insanity " of Jamiroquai ', Santa Monica by Everclear, " Disarm " Smashing Pumpkins, the title Zombie of the Cranberries, as well as many hits of Green Day, Offspring, No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morissette or Foo Fighters.
Since 2005, Billboard magazine adapted its methodology to also include the number of remote loadings Internet on sites like iTunes.
Investors
In 2005, Billboard is with the hands of the conglomerate Dutch VNU.

End of the year
At the end of each year, the magazine condenses the result of all its charts, and the best artist of each category sees himself decreeing a Billboard Music Awards with the ceremony éponyme which proceeds in December. The results are also published in the last edition of the year of the magazine like in the emission American Top 40. More recently, the Latin Billboard Awards reward the artists for the Latin Musique.
