Bilbo the Hobbit

THE HOBBIT OR THERE AND BACK AGAIN (original title: in Hobbit The. There and Back Again ) is a whimsical novel of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien published in 1937.

It was the subject of two notable revisions, the first in 1951, which takes into account the publication of the Seigneur of the Rings , the second in 1966, for the exit of the book to the the United States. It was published in French for the first time in 1969.

With its publication, Bilbo the Hobbit already partly forms part of the “ legendarium ” of the Ground of the Medium, as allusions to Gondolin show it, quoted elf of the Beleriand. However, at the time of the writing of Bilbo the Hobbit , J.R.R. Tolkien yet at the head did not have the history of the Seigneur of the Rings , and it is after a strong demand on behalf of the readers that it started a continuation, which was to become its more famous novel.

In the French translation, the names of the characters were not francized, contrary to the translation of the Seigneur of the Rings . This last constituting the bulkiest work, we decided to use here the names francized for reasons of coherence. Thus Bilbo Baggins in the original version becomes Bilbon Sacquet, and that Thorin Oakenshield becomes Thorin Ecu-of-oak.

Synopsis

The novel tells the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, peaceful Hobbit, at the time of its voyage to the Solitary Mount where the dragon Smaug saw. Jovial fellow comfortably installed in his “hole” of Cul-de-sac ( Bag-end -   by hole, it is necessary to include/understand a house troglodyte cossue), it is reticent to leave, more especially as the hobbits are traditionally peaceful and not very adventurous, though at the Drums ( Tooks ) from which Bilbo goes down, one is adventurous of wire father… He is involved in the adventure by the magician Gandalf and thirteen dwarf (namely Thorin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dwalin, Glóin, Óin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Fíli and Kíli) to go to recover the treasure usurped with the ancestors of the dwarves by the Smaug dragon. Thus a voyage via Fondcombe ( Rivendell ) follows, the refuge of the Elves, the solitary Grounds, the black Forest…

Bilbo will appear essential to the operation, and will discover the famous Anneau of Being able (at the base of the account of the Seigneur of the Rings ), lost by Sméagol in a cave of goblin. It is also at the time of this adventure that it will find its sword “Dard” and its coat of mail in Mithril, two objects which it will bequeath to Frodon

Bilbo the Hobbit is in fact the account of this adventure by Bilbon itself, written in its old days.
