Bigi Poika

Bigi Poika (in Caribbean language Akarani , is a village of the Suriname where a community of Indians Kali' Na saw. Bigi Polka is located in the district of Para between the rivers of Saramacca and Coesewijne, to approximately 80 km of Paramaribo. The village falls under an authority Indigène. The chief of the village east Charles Arumjo ; since September 2001 he is also member of the office of the Association of the indigenous chiefs of village of Suriname. At the beginning of 2006, Bigi Poika counts approximately 650 inhabitants.

Geography

On the basis of the capital Paramaribo, it is necessary to take the road Indira Gandhi ( Indira Gandhiweg ) in direction of the International airport Johan Adolf Pengel (better known under the name of Zanderij ). Then, one takes the East-West connection ( Avanaveroweg ) towards the west, in direction of Apoera, while passing by the bridge of the Saramacca river. 25 km further, a way leave towards north.

Bigi Poika is located in an area of Savane. There is no Tropical forest, in spite of the few plantations. It is a Village-street, the main roads stops close to a small bridge on the brook of Poika, tributary of Saramacca.

Bigi Poika is served in the bus by a daily connection at the beginning of Paramaribo. For of the bad condition of maintenance of the roads since the airport, it is necessary sometimes more than 4 hours to traverse the distance of 80 km which separate Bigi Poika from the capital. The roads are practicable only in cross-country Véhicule. The inhabitants of the area express regularly against the bad conditions of circulation.

Economy

The inhabitants of Bigi Poika live hunting and Sylviculture, production of their small holding, and a little the fishing. The every day, the women bring their productions to the markets of Paramaribo: will peprewatra (fish soup) and Manioc, sometimes of game and the craft industry (fabrics in Coton, woodcarvings). Many men work with the services of State in the natural reserve of the higher Coesewijne, on which the inhabitants of Bigi Poika exert a Common law.

Teaching and equipment

The principal language is the Caribbean language; the majority of the inhabitants, especially the young people, also speak the Sranan and a little the Dutch. The village has a elementary school with four company flats. The teachers come from the village (Charles Arumjo is the principal), even if in the past much of teachers of “the city” were detached in Bigi Poika. Close to the school is the communal room, built on a traditional model, opened on the sides and glaze of canes.

The village also has a small polyclinic, but often there is no permanence. Consequently, the inhabitants must go to the polyclinic of Zanderij, at two hours by the road.

There are some small trade of general food. Since the years 1990, the village also has a radiographic connection to the phone network.

History

For a long time, the population of Bigi Poika was extremely isolated from the other ethnicities of Suriname. In second half of the 20th century, this insulation was stopped by the construction of the second East-West road link of the country.
