Area of the Big lakes

The Big lakes , or area of the Big lakes , indicate also the area close to these lakes. This completely includes the Rwanda, the Burundi and the Uganda as well as portions of the Democratic republic of Congo, Tanzania and Kenya (while name “Africa of the Big lakes” is only limited to the Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Democratic republic of Congo. )

This area is one of the areas most strongly populated world with an estimated population of 107 million inhabitants. Because of its old volcanic activity, this part of Africa is also one of the most fertile areas. Its altitude rather gives him also a moderate climate in spite of its equatorial localization . This climate facilitates much the breeding (the Bétail remains with the variation of the diseases), in particular of Bovin S and Chèvre S.

From the density of the population and the farm surplus of the area, the zone was strongly organized in many small States. Most powerful of these monarchies were Rwanda, Burundi, the Buganda and the Bunyoro. Contrary to the other areas of Africa, the old borders were often maintained by the colonial powers.

Very coveted as a source of the the Nile, the area interested a long time the Européen S. the first to arrive in the area number were the missionary S. They was a success limited in the conversion of the autochtones but prepared the area with colonization to come. The contact increased with the rest of the world led to a series of epidemic S catastrophic relating to at the same time the human beings and the cattle. The population of the area decreased enormously, until 60  % in certain zones. The area returned on its demographic level précolonial only in the years 1950.

Regarded as an area with a great potential after independence, the area underwent during the last years of the civil wars, intense violences and a Génocide, which left it in a serious state of poverty of which only Kenya and Tanzania are free.
