Big Stink
Big Stink was the name of the one of the planes Boeing B-29 Superfortress ((B-29-40-MO 44-27354, Victor 90 ) having taken part in the mission of dropping of the atomic bomb Fat Man on Nagasaki with the Japan the August 6th 1945. Its role was to ensure of the catches of sight of the explosion and to analyze the edffets bomb. Scientists had taken seat on board apparatus. The mission was ensured by the C-14 crew and major James I. Hopkins Jr. with the device controls.
Big Stink had to give up one of its members whereas it was on the landing strip. Major Hopkins indeed ordered to Doctor Robert Serber Projet Alberta to leave the apparatus because the scientist did not have his parachute. Serber was however the only one with knowing to handle the camera at high-speed. Hopkins accepted the instructions on the operation of the apparatus by radio since Tinian.
The plane does not succeed in however arriving at the point of meeting envisaged for the remainder of the squadron before the dropping. This last continued the mission without him. It arrived however at Nagasaski a few times after the explosion and could take photographs of the devastators effects of the bomb. It turned over then to the ground of Yontan to Okinawa, with Bockscar and The Great Artiste .
The name of the plane wants literally to say “large stink”.
