Big Dig

The Big Dig is the nickname of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project , an underground highway project with Boston with the the United States in construction since 1985. Its goal is to even reduce circulation of surface in the heart of Boston, mainly that which passes by the Central Artery (left the Interstate 93 ). The greatest part of the project is a long tunnel of 3,5 mile S, which replaces an elevated highway. This project also envisages the construction of the tunnel Ted Williams , which makes it possible to join the International airport Logan as well as the bridge Zakim Bunker Hill starting from the principal tunnel.
Following delays, stops, overcosts, escapes, bad executions and the use of materials out-standards, it is about the most expensive construction project real in the United States. Initially estimated with the cost of 2,5 billion USD in 1985, it cost 14,6 billion until now them (in July 2006).
July 10th, 2006, following the fall of several concrete parts attached to the ceiling, the segment which connects L Interstate 90 to the tunnel Ted Williams is closed indefinitely with the public.
