Big Brother
Big Brother (which means Big brother ) is a Personnage of fiction, created by the journalist and British writer George Orwell for her Romance 1984 published in 1949.
Big Brother is the emblem of the “Party”, of which he is the creator, to which the citizens of “Océania” dedicate a Culte of the personality. In all the streets, it is represented on posters by a male face man with a moustache, fixing the passer by in the eyes, in an expression which wants to be reassuring at the same time and severe. It is omnipresent in the universe of 1984 , as well on the leaflets as on the “large-sized telescreens” of the private residences, or at the meetings of mass of the Party during which is stressed (“B.B, B.B, B.B”). It is metamorphosed in a referent for all, in a total and complete incarnation of the Party. It becomes the Party. The name of Big Brother even is to him a paradox, just like the names of the ministries océaniens. Angsoc preaches a disintegration of the family core indeed, by encouraging the children to denounce their parents, or by inhibiting any love within a couple with the profit to have it to procreate for the Party. It is thus paradoxical that its name is “ Big brother ”, which is an image normally intended to encourage the love within a famille.
A famous sentence remained about it: Big brother is watching you ( Big brother looks at you ). This expression denounces the omnipresence of the vidéos monitoring or voyeurism, inter alia.
In fact, one discovers at the end of the novel that Big Brother does not exist as an human being (from the internal point of view to the novel). It is only one figure of propaganda, they are the members of the interior Party who direct.
