Bielefeld

Bielefeld is an industrial city-district of Germany, in the North-East of the Rhineland-of-North-Westphalia, and with the skirt of forest of Teutoburg. Its population in 2004 was of 329.000 inhabitants. Bielefeld has a university, and is the place of origin of the football club Arminia Bielefeld.

History

Bielefeld was founded in 1214 by the Count Hermann IV of Ravensberg in order to keep a passage crossing the forest of Teutoburg. A large castle, the Sparrenburg, was built in the middle of the medieval city. There remained impregnable during the Middle Ages. The castle does not resemble any more so that it was during this period. It fell in ruin during the 18th century and the 19th century and was restored in 1879.

During XVe century, Bielefeld was a minor member of the Hanse. Later, this city started to trade the flax and became famous under the name of " the city of the lin". Currently, principal industries of Bielefeld are food industry, the apparatuses household, the data processing and of many heavy industries. Bielefeld is also the seat of two important establishments of social security (von Bodelschwingsche Anstalten Bethel and Evangelisches Johanneswerk).

Bielefeld has a university since 1969. Among the first professors the Sociologue Niklas Luhmann appeared. The other institutions of higher education are Kirchliche Hochschule Bethel (intended for the formation of the Théologien S) and a Fachhochschule. Among the principal cultural institutions of the area and with beyond the museum of art and the concert hall Rudolf Oetker (Rudolf-Oetker-Market) are.
