Building of Unloading of Tanks
A building of the National marine bore the name of " Bidassoa" as a fifth of the series of the " Buildings of Unloading of Tanks " (BDC) of Trieux type. It was the first French warship to carry it.In his file of general presentation, its commander said some in 1980: " This building of operational transport bears the name of a small coastal river separating France and Spain through the Basque Country and that the communes border of Urrugne, of Hendaye and Biriatou which accepted of it sponsorship with its birth in 1961. Launched in December 1960, the godmother was Mrs Viaud, beautiful girl of Pierre Loti. For the ceremonies of sponsorship of 1st at July 5th, 1961 were associated the Spanish authorities with Fontarabie, Irun and Vera de Bidassoa like those of the Spanish naval station ".
The BDC Bidassoa was based in Lorient as from February 1964, then in Toulon in 1983. It sailed mainly in the Mediterranean and along the coasts of Western Africa. It has even " poussé" as far as South America, in the Antilles and the United States like in Indian Ocean. It took part in many operational missions of support of our in particular committed terrestrial forces in Tunisia and Algeria, in Lebanon for UNO, in ivory Coast and in Cameroun (for our elements stationed in Chad) like in Madagascar and in Reunion. Bidassoa was disarmed in Lorient on December 12th, 1986 and to lie at the sea-bed of Iroise since 1989. During its career this BDC traversed the equivalent of 18 round the world tours (more than 400.000 nautical) and carried out more than 300 plageages on the shores of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and in Indian Ocean.
The BDC took the changing of the " Landing Ship Tank" (L.S.T) American which was illustrated at the time of the unloading in Normandy and in the Pacific. Eights of them sailed under French house, thanks to the Marshall plan, and valiantly furrowed, with our 5 BDC, during 30 years, the seas " chaudes" of our planet.
