Biblical expressions
Here some expressions drawn from the Bible.

Genesis

a hurly-burly : a confused and agitated situation. Origine: in the account of the Genesis, the world before its creation by God " was only loneliness and chaos" ( Tohou vaBohou (תהוובהו) in Hebrew in Genesis 1,2.
- the Forbidden fruit : all the more desirable thing as it is prohibited. Origine: fruit (traditionally represented by an apple) gathered by Eve in the garden of Eden and in which Adam crunched in spite of the prohibition of God, in the Bible.
- the apple of Adam : visible projection of the thyroid cartilage, in the middle of the former part of the neck of the man. Origine: fruit of the knowledge to which Adam would have tasted before being driven out of Éden.
- behavior of Eve and behavior of Adam (namely the Nudité). Origine: after having tasted in the fruit of knowledge, Adam and Eve knew that they were naked .
- Grow and multiply repeated Injonction four times at the beginning of the Genesis, fish and birds, then in Adam and Eve () then with Noah and his sons ().
- the Original sin : fault made voluntarily and consciously against God or the divine law. Origine: sin made by Adam and Eve, and who would sully according to the Christian tradition very human as of her birth.
- You are dust : modesty of the human condition. Origine: formulation of the punishment, after the original sin: " With the sweat of your face, you will eat bread until you turn over on the ground because it is of him that you were taken. Yes, you are dust and to dust you will turn over " (Genesis 3,19)
- Old like Mathusalem : symbol of seniority. Origine: Mathusalem is the character, quoted in the Bible, which lived oldest.
- One time antédiluvienne : extremely old. Origine: former to the Flood.
- After me the Flood : (word allotted to Louis XV). Is used to indicate that one makes fun of the future. Origine: assembled water, described in the Bible, which would have almost covered the Earth.
- Arch of Noah : Origine: vessel in which, according to the Bible, Noah took seat with his wife, her sons and a couple of animals of each species during the Flood.
- to fall asleep in the vines of the lord : to be drunk dead. Origine: allusion to outgoing Noah of the Arch.
- the coat of Noah : modest way to hide or minimize an awkward question. Origine: to see Canaan (patriarch).
- a tower of Babel : place where one speaks all kinds of languages. Origine: the biblical account explains the existence of many languages as coming from the divine punishment against the men who had decided contruire a high tower until the Ciel to reach God.
- the promised land : rich, ideal or idyllic place. Origine: the Pays of Canaan or Ground of Israel, that, according to the Bible, God promised in Abraham and his descent and where milk and honey run.
- To be changed into salt statue: immobility, to remain fixed. Origine: during their escape of Sodome and Gomorrhe, the woman of Loth was transformed into salt statue after being itself turned over towards the cities that God was destroying by fire and hail.
- Large hunter in front of the eternal . Origine: indicates two large hunters of the Bible: Nimrod and Esaü.
- Which goes to hunting loses its place : to preserve his position one should not leave it one moment. Origine: the Right of seniority (the place of elder) taken by Jacob to his brother Esaü, left to drive out to prepare a meal with his/her father Isaac. Jacob, helped by his mother Rebecca thus accepted the blessing of their father and had to flee in front of the fury of Esaü.

- a Benjamin : last-born child of the children of a family. Origine: it is the name of the last of the twelve children of Jacob. Genesis 35,18
- Of the thin cows : shortage or deceleration of the economy which involve restrictions (constant). Origine: the interpretation of a dream of the Pharaon by Joseph wire of Jacob, prisoner in Egypt.
