Biberach

Biberach is a German city in the Land of Bade-Wurtemberg. Population: 32  000 (2004).

Geography

Biberach is located into High-Souabe, between Ulm and Friedrichshafen (Lake of Constancy). Biberach is the capital of the " Kreis" (equivalent of a department) Biberach which is in agrarian prevalence, but there are also important companies: machine tool: Handtmann, construction of the machines for public works: Liebherr (cranes), drug company (Boehringer Ingelheim (Thomae));

History & Civilization

Biberach, since 1281, knew a long story of independence. It should be remembered that Germany, before the French revolution and the rise of the State Nation was composed of a multiplicity of free cities (freie Reichsstadt), counties and kingdoms (Prussie, Bavaria etc). The most important trade of the city were the tisserands. The majority of the inhabitants of the city were Protestants, the countryside was rather catholic, under the domination of the archbishop's palace of Austria. The two confessions succeeded has to find a comprompis as for decides between administrative offices and infrastructure of their city, moreover single in Germany. Protestants and catholics use the same church and divide the expenses of its use.

The most famous character of Biberach is Wieland, the " Voltaire" German. Every year, in summer, during one week, there is the " Biberacher Schuetzenfest" , the festival of the city.
