Bhubaneshwar or Bhubaneswar is the capital of the State of the Orissa in India.

The name of the city

The current name of the city, Bhubaneswar , drift of the term Sanskrit Bhuvaneśvara , " the lord of the mondes" , epithet of the god Shiva, to which the city is devoted.

The transformation of the v into B is due to the fact that this consonant merges sometimes with B in certain languages of the North-East of India, like the Bengali or the Oriya. This transformation involved many disparities in the Latin transcription of the name of the city. Thus, in addition to the official transcription (Bhubaneswar), you will be able to find the capital of Orissa mentioned like Bhubaneshwar, Bhubaneshvar, Bhuvanesvar, Bhuvaneshvar etc

At the time traditional and medieval, the city carried very an other name, not indicating Bhuvaneśvara whereas God and not the city. The city was called Ekāmra , and was regarded as one of large the will kṣetra or crowned ground of India, as well as the town of Puri, as for it called Puruṣottama will kṣetra.

The history of Bhubaneswar gave place besides, undoubtedly around XVe century, a more or less legendary chronicle of the city. It is about the Ekāmra Purāṇa , text which one finds recension in Sanskrit as in Oriya, and whose title means " The legend of the city of Ekāmra".
