History

The site of Betton was occupied as of the Âge of Iron by the Gaulois of the tribe of the Redones whose capital was Rennes. The names of Evran and the Gravel are memories of this first Celtic settlement , towards 600 av. J. - C..

After the tender of the Armorique towards 53 av. J. - C., the first task of the Romains was the creation of an highway network to sit their domination, which explains the existence with Betton of three Roman ways important.

At the same time, the Gallo-Roman fields are constituted around these ways: the farm of the City-Red (use of brick S reds), Mézière and Rigné.

The Romans build the military stations of Châtelier. They occupy the current village of the Key where one discovered an containing vase of the currencies of 2nd and 3rd centuries. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Germanic bands infiltrating in Gaulle massively at the 5th century arrive in the area. The Francs colonize Betton partly, leaving with the country the name of one of their chief: Betto. They create strengthened rural establishments there: large Court, New court, court of Maine.

Betton is christianized very early, towards 470, evangelized by Gallo-Roman missionaries who build there a very old Monastère: monasterium Betonis .

Of this monastery, the current private school still has important vestiges. And the large table which decorates today the circumference of the chorus of the church, on the right and behind of the high altar, Istres Contencin, reports these memories of the origin bénédictine. One sees holy Melaine there, coming to visit the monastery, a procession of monks to the meeting of the bishop who blesses them. The monks enjoyed in this parish rather beautiful incomes, but in spite of that their church fell in ruins, and with 15th and 16th centuries the parish church replaced the church priorale. In the old church, the lord of Betton made say a mass each Sunday and gave up a right of dîme with this intention: the “feature of the luminary”. The first church was burnt in 1590 during the wars of the Ligue; the worship was transferred from it in the vault from the priory from the Abbaye from Saint-Melaine, with a few meters in the north of the current church.

On the mistress-pane (XVe century) the legend of holy Martin   was reproduced; ; it was sold in 1879 with the Musée of Cluny. The higher bellows of this Vitrail are currently exposed to the museum of Brittany. The remaining whole of the stained glasses as well as the Baptismal font double, carved, armorial bearings with the weapons of Saint Gilles are with the museum from Cluny to Paris.
