The commune of Bettembourg is one of the 116 communes of the Grand-Duché of Luxembourg in the canton of the Esch-on-Alzette, close to the French border .

Geography

It is situéé in the plain of the the Alzette to the confluence of this one with Diddelengerbaach.

History

According to our current knowledge, the sector of the commune of Bettembourg was populated only sporadically in prehistoric time. It up to now for example only of did not discover there little of this time, as for example of the pots of a tomb of the 7th century before J-CH. In Gallo-Roman time, the settlement changed in-depth. The rise of Bettembourg

The rise of Bettembourg is started in 1859 by the construction of the first railway line between Luxembourg and Thionville. Still of other lines followed: Bettembourg-Esch, Bettembourg-Dudelange-Factory. Bettembourg became thus the node of the important traffic. Many men found a work place thanks to this increase in the activity. The population rose more and more. Today, Bettembourg is one of the largest communes in Luxembourg.
