Beta

The kind Beta belongs to the family of the Chénopodiacée S, tribe of the Cyclolobae .

Common nouns: white beet (white beet), beet.

Near to the kinds Chenopodium (chénopode) and Spinacia (spinach), this kind includes/understands 11 species. They are herbaceous plants, more or less fleshy, with reddish or greenish flowers, whose floral pole can reach approximately 1,5 m in height.

A species is largely cultivated throughout the world: Beta vulgaris L. This species includes/understands very many varieties which were selected either for their root fleshy and rich in sugar, or for their sheets at very developed coasts; they are divided into four types:

The sugar beet acquired a very great economic importance, thanks to the production of Sucre (Saccharose) of which it is the second source in the world after the Canne with sugar.

The maritime White beet ( Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima ) is a wild plant pushing in seaside. It would be the ancestor of cultivated white beets.
