History

The Celtic origins of the name of Bessuéjouls, the clearing with the boxwood, attest an old occupation of the site.
A primitive sanctuary was yielded to the canons augustins of Pébrac, by Pons of Etienne, bishop of Rodez, in 1085, and at this point in time it was equipped with this bell-tower-porch.

Places and monuments

the church of Saint-Pierre de Bessuéjouls.

In a bosky bower where Astruge runs, the church of Saint-Pierre de Bessuéjouls, if it were rebuilt in XVIe century, in the Gothic style, kept, of his Romance origins, its bell-tower-porch like on the floor of this last, the high vault dedicated to saint Michel.

On one of the capitals, on the left of the furnace bridge, two centaurs with famous persons support the scaled tails of a siren which draws aside its hair braided in plaits. This decoration is found on one of the capitals of abbey of Conches, which also has a high vault dedicated to Michel saint. What leaves think that certain sculptures could be carried out by the same workshop. Another capital treats topic of the vine and introduces two characters holding in hand of the leafy vine branches charged with bunches.

The furnace bridge is decorated, on its principal face, of a plank made up of cross with broad petals and palmettes, surmounted by three arcs of which a trefoil central arc of invoice Mozarab. On a side, holy Michel terrace the demon and, on the other, a saint, perhaps the Gabriel archangel, deploys a phylactère. An inscription was engraved above a niche, dug in the thickness of the wall, which was to contain the relics of a saint, undoubtedly holy Pierre since the church is dedicated to him. But, nothing is sure because the dedication, too laconic, informs only over the month of dedication of the vault.

Three representations of the trefoil arch underline the relationship to art Spanish Mozarab and do not fail to evoke the passage of the pilgrims of Saint-Jacob.
