Bessoncourt

Bessoncourt is a common French, located in the department of the Territoire of Belfort and the area Franche-Comté.

Near to the agglomeration of Belfort, this common preserved a village character.

Geography

On the 780 hectares of the communal territory, more than one third consists of forest (181,62 ha of communal forest, 126,36 ha of national forest).

The territory of the commune is sprinkled by two small rivers: the Madeleine and the Ostrich.

History

If the territory of the commune is crossed by the old Roman way which connected Mandeure to Cernay, one does not find trace of the existence of Bessoncourt before the 9th century. Indeed, an act of Louis Débonnaire of the June 21st 823, names Beyssingen like belonging to the equipment allotted to Maso, founder of the abbey of Masevaux. One is unaware of the creation date of the village which was then located at the locality Close May . should be awaited 1344 so that an inhabited place named is mentioned Buchingen which seems to be an ecclesiastical property, but depending then on the chapter of Belfort.

The local tradition places the destruction of the village in 1618 following an epidemic of Peste. The victims buried with the cemetery of Phaffans would have borrowed for their last voyage it “via deaths” which appears besides always in the land register. Although depend on the parish of Phaffans, the village had in 1655 a vault dedicated to Saint-Vincent . In 1773 exists already a cemetery but it is only in 1844 that the inhabitants, of which the number exceeded 540, have the current parish church, devoted with Holy-Suzanne.

In 1751 François Noblat, representative of the king, spoke about Bessoncourt in these terms: This territory is one of widest bailliage and the best for its grounds .
Après the construction of the fort of 1883 with 1886, if the agricultural activity were always prevalent, the village did not count less than seven bar-restaurants.

Civil inheritance

Military inheritance

  • the fort of Senarmont belongs to the belt of the fortifications of Belfort. The barracks external with its enclosure, now disappeared, make it possible to lodge in times of Guerre 700 to 800 men. He hardly knew the test of fire. In 1914 it is used as hospital. During the Entre-deux-guerres various regiments hold garrison to with it, then it is used as ammunition dump, initially for the German during the occupation then until in 1969 for the French Army. It was then property of civil protection, then the commune acquired in 1993 of it in order to maintain it and to place rooms at the disposal of the inhabitants the commune.
