Bessines-on-Gartempe
Bessines-on-Gartempe (Becinas in Occitan) is a common French, located in the department of the High-Vienna and the area the Limousin. Its inhabitants is called Bessinauds.
Geography
- Bessines-on-Gartempe is located at 35km in the North of Limoges in the valley of the Gartempe whose banks form by places of beautiful throats.
- Morterolles (Mòrteirau in Occitan), which belongs to the commune, is sprinkled by Sows.
History
- Bessines was a cure of the former archpriest of Rancon which had as a Saint-Leger owner. At the end of the 18th century, it had 1.500 communicants (approximately 2.000 inhabitants). The church is a monument of the Romance time remakes mainly at the 15th century. The septentrional vault was that of the lords of Monisme. With the Cross of Breuil, one finds a manor located road of Paris. The king Henri IV there drove out and laid down the October 28th 1605. He was accepted there by the nobility and the middle-class of the surroundings. A table preserved the memory of its passage in this place. In direction of Châteauponsac, one finds an old bridge thrown on the Gartempe, the Bridge of the Catches, thus named because it would have been built by the monks of Grandmont. The castle of Monisme was built in the middle of the 15th century by the family of Razès of which the most famous representative, Edme Léonard was killed with the battle of Utrecht.
- Morterolles counted 500 communicants at the end of the 18th century, approximately 690 inhabitants. The cure was served by a monk about Saint Jean of Jerusalem. The church, construction Romance of the 12th century, sheltered a crucifix raised with the use of the Templiers. The latter had in 1282 a commandery where was kept, in 1484, Zizim , brother of the emperor of Turkey while one built to place it with Bourganeuf the gross tower which bears its name. Louis XIII crossed Morterolles in 1632 and the pope Pie VII spent there the night in June 1814.
- Bessines and Morterolles forms nothing any more but only one commune since June 18th, 1982: Bessines-on-Gartempe.
