Inheritance
The historical center of Besse presents a great architectural unit. This unit comes from the many old buildings but also from the nearly exclusive use of the “stone of Besse”. This stone often compared with the Pierre de Volvic is also a trachyandesite. Its aspect is more rustic than the latter and it presents more marked nuances of color.
Religious heritage
- Church Saint-Andrew: of Romance style and Gothic. Initial construction dates from the 12th century. The chorus goes back to 1555 and was restored at the 19th century. A fire destroyed in 2007 part of the carved stalls of the chorus. The church shelters the statue of Notre-Dame de Vassivière. This black Vierge with his/her child on the knees is carried in procession on July 2nd with the vault of the sanctuary of Vassivière, to 7 km of Besse, where it spends the summer before being gone down again at the time of the festival of the " Dévalade" 1st Sunday of September after the Saint-Mathieu.
