Bescat

Bescat is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine. Its inhabitants is called Bescatais.

Geography

Bescat is located on the southern side of a Moraine at the entry of the Vallée of Ossau.

Hydrography

The commune is crossed by the Gave d' Oloron and its affluent, the brook of Trébès.

The toponym Bescat appears in the forms Bescad (1154, titles of Barcelona), Albescat (1270, titles of Ossau), Besquat (1418, cartulaire of Ossau or red book ).

History

Paul Raymond note which the commune counted a laic abbey, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn.
In 1385, Bescat counted 14 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Ossau.
