Berwinne

The Berwinne or Berwine (Dutch: Berwijn Limbourgeois : Berweng ) is a small Belgian river Bassin pouring of the Meuse, between Liege and Maastricht.

The sources of the rivères are with the locality " of Birven" in the east of the Walloon commune of Aubel, near the American military cemetery of Henri-Vault (Hendrikkapelle). The river runs then through the localities of Mortroux, Bombaye, Dalhem and Berneau, to its confluence with the Meuse with Mouland.

The river is the principal river of the Pays of Herve. its valley shelters in particular the Abbaye of Valley-God. Its principal affluents are the Bel in Aubel and the Bolland in Dalhem.

Etymology

Bubbling source (Indo-European *bheru “source”, Welsh berwi “to boil”).

Flow

The medium flow of the river measured with Dalhem between 1994 and 2003 is of 1,32 m ³ a second. During the same period one recorded:

  • an average maximum of 1,83 m ³ in 1999.
  • an average minimum of 0,62 in 2003.
