Bertsulari
The bertsu is a song of improvisation rhyme and stanza whose art goes back to the 18th century. Although present in other areas, the bertsularism remained especially long-lived with the Basque Country ( bertsulariza ).
The bertsulari (i.e. that which creates and déclame a bertsu) registered its performance (individual or in duet) in a process of collective construction, in phase with the public. The bertsulari must indeed adapt its improvisation, which is all at the same time a memory work and a play of address, to the reactions of the listeners.
The competitions are organized in the form of tournaments between several bertsularis on the basis of poetic and/or musical topic.
