Bertrand Pujo

Betrand Pujo (born the August 21st 1878 with Orignac in the Hautes-Pyrénées - died in 1964) was a French soldier, who was air General, Ministre for the Air, chair Air France and which was used as lieutenant with the Foreign legion of 1899 for 1907.

Biography

Bertrand Pujo made his secondary studies with the college of Tarbes. Receipt with ESM of Saint-Cyr military school, it joined the school the October 26th 1897.

Left with the rank second lieutenant, it chooses the Foreign legion where it is affected with the 21e company of the 2nd RE. In August 1900 it embarks with the 6/2e RE bound for Haiphong. Its unit is affected in the area of Yen Bay within the regiment of walk of the 2nd RE. It takes part in the countryside of China with the 14th company. Promoted lieutenant on October 1st 1901, it is repatriated at the end of stay, the in October 1902. After one last year with Saïda with the 17th company of the 5th battalion of the 2nd RE, it sets out again with the Tonkin with the 5/2e RE. It remains in Yen Luong, then in Viétri and finally in Phu Doan. It is then affected with the 1st RE at the time of a reorganization of the formations of the Legion in Tonkin.

Repatriate in Algeria in 1907, it joined beautiful Sidi Abbès. Admitted at the university of war, it leaves there patented. It is promoted with the rank of captain the September 24th 1912. It is then affected with the EM of 18th CA and passes its patent of observer in the plane. January 1st 1914, it is named knight of the Légion of honor.

As from July 1914, he becomes exclusively aviator and carries out many missions of observation on the occupied territory by the enemy. It receives two mentions in dispatches. Promoted major, on October 1st 1916, it is named assistant of the chief of the aéro with the GQG. In 1919, it enters to the cabinet of the Minister for the War. It is promoted with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. The cross of Officer of the Legion of Honor to him is decreed the June 16th 1920. Promoted colonel in Dec. 1921, it passes to the 35e regiment of aviation, which it receives in command the April 8th 1922. It is patented there pilot the June 24th.

In September 1926, it is allowed in 1e section of the general officers and receives the ribbon of commander of the Legion of Honor in 1928. Promoted Major general, it enters to the superior council of the air in January 1930. In December 1935, large Officer of the Legion of Honor, it is named chief of general staff of the air force and vice-president of the superior council of the Air. It leaves the active service the October 14th 1936 to assume the chairmanship of Air France. It is then high with the dignity of large cross of the Legion of honor in 1938.

Raised with the general row and name of air the September 2nd 1939, it is named Minister for the Air by the marshal Pétain in June 1940, function which it occupies of the June 16th to the July 12th. It becomes again president of Air France until in 1944. During “the purification” of 1945, the High Court of justice pronounces a withdrawal of case, have regard to its activities in the resistance.
