Bertrand Clauzel

Bertrand, count Clauzel , Marshal of France, born with Mirepoix (Ariège), the December 12th 1773, died in the castle of Secourrieu with Cintegabelle (Haute-Garonne) the April 21st 1842.

Biography

He was nephew of conventional the Jean-Baptiste Clauzel. Enlisted as of 1791, under-lieutement with the 43e of line, captain of hunters with horse in 1792, adjudant-general in 1793, chief of staff of division Pérignon, Brigadier general and commander de Bologne, at the time of the retirement of Schérer in Italy, Major general to the Armed with Santo Domingo, governor of Raguse in 1807.

It was sent in Spain, under Junot and Masséna (1810); it besieged Ciudad Rodrigo, was wounded with Salamanque, saved in 1812, by a memorable retirement, the Armée with Portugal and brought back it in Spain, accepted in reward the command as a chief of the army of the North of Spain (1813).

It was one of the last to low put the weapons in 1814, and one of the first to be declared in favor of with the Hundred Days, took at that time the command of Bordeaux and forced the duchess of Angouleme to leave this city. At the time of the return of the isle of Elba, he opposed, with the head Armée with the South, an energetic resistance to the enemies who invaded the departments of the Midi.

Included/understood in the ordinance of the July 24th 1814, it was exiled with the the United States. It is at that time that Christophe and Pétion offered great rewards to the captain of the building which would save Clausel.

Returned in France in 1820, it was sent to the House of Commons in 1827, will coopéra with the Révolution of July, and was sent in Africa, the capacity as general governor. General-in-chief of the troops of the Algeria, it occupied Blida, Médéa, after having forced the Col of Mouzaïa, and tried the first work of colonization; but it yielded the provinces of Constantine and Oran to princes Tunisia NS and was isolated for this reason.

Pointed out in France in 1831, it accepted the stick of marshal, was returned in Algérie in 1832 until in 1836. There it took Mascara, and ordered the the first forwarding of Constantine and was a failure for lack of reinforcements, and was definitively replaced. Appointed Rethel since 1827, it supported the liberal ideas constantly and Algeria causes.

The principal claims to fame of the Clausel marshal are the campaigns of 1810 and 1811 in Spain, during which it supported all the weight of a terrible war. In 1812, it made a brilliant retirement, known as of Portugal, compared with the retirement of Ney in Russia.

Distinctions

  • It belongs to the 558 officers to have his name engraved under the Triumphal arch of the Star.
