Bertran de Born (v. 1140 - v. 1215), lord of Hautefort, at the border between the Limousin and Périgord, is a Troubadour which celebrates the love and the war. It was interfered with the fights with wire Henri {{II}} Plantagenet, and took to party against Richard for Henri the Young person. With died of this one, it was reconciled with Richard, whom it supported in his turn against Philippe-Auguste.

Its more beautiful poetries are Sirvente S with the very violent satirical accent.

The life of Bertran de Born was described in the edition of its poems which Gerard Gouiran made, professor with the Université of Montpellier.

According to the feudal uses of this area, he was not only lord of Hautefort, but he was it jointly with his brother.

One finds other cases of coseigneuries among the troubadours, most famous being that of the " four troubadours of Worn " , three brothers and a cousin. The 12th century was marked by what the historians of the Middle Ages regard as a " revival of État" , at least of the princely idea. The seigniories which had been made independent in the past entered in competition with territorial principalities - the Duché of Aquitaine, the Comté of Barcelona and Provence, the Comté of Toulouse, then French royalty after the Albigensian Croisade of the 13th century - which disputed to them " to them; mini-States ". One of the average employees by the territorial principalities to decrease the influence of the local lords of the manor was to resort to the internal feudal fights their families.

Thus Bertran de Born entered in conflict with his/her own brother, passed under the bosom of Plantagenêt - become after 1154 and the marriage of Aliénor of Aquitaine with Henri suzerains of the Limousin. Consequently, Bertran de Born had all the difficulties in take advantage of its right to be lord independent of Hautefort. This fight for independence is in the middle of the poetry of Bertran de Born, which approaches political topics almost exclusively. Gerard Gouiran recalled the comings and goings of the capacity of the troubadour on his end of territory.

It is enough to say that Bertran de Born sought itself to exploit the dissensions inside the family of Plantagenêt in order to keep her independence, but which it was finally constrained to go to humiliate itself publicly in front of the family of its suzerains when she was reconciled. He excited wire of Henri to fight against their father, either whom he looked like national chiefs, because of Aquitanian blood that their mother had transmitted to them, or whom he wanted to lose these princes the ones by the others. He was especially dependant with elder the Henri the Young person. Having fallen between the hands from king d' Angleterre, it had to obtain its forgiveness only to wake up the memory of this young prince. Returned with freedom, he lived since in rest and died in a cloister.

Bertran de Born was one of the Masters of the Sirvente S political. Its poetry, which approaches topics sometimes very violent one as when he sings the joy of the war, is to be placed among major works of medieval poetry occitane.
