Bertrade de Laon

Bertrade or Berthe de Laon known as Berthe with the Large Foot (Laon, May 726 - † Choisy-with-Vat, July 12th 783), girl of the count Caribert de Laon.
Its nickname would be due to a foot which it would have had larger than the other. The name of his/her mother is unknown, but one agrees for reasons Onomastique S on the fact that it prénommait Gisele of Aquitaine.
Biography
The Mayor of the palate Pip the Brief which intended to rent its virtues and its vast culture, makes it come close to him in 741 and his/her concubine, whereas he is already married with a Danubian princess of which he had five children.
It puts at the Charles world in 742, future Charlemagne, then Carloman in 747. Pip repudiates his first wife and returns it towards its native land and entrusts his/her five children to monasteries. Finally, he marries Berthe in 749. It is crowned queen with her husband, in 751, after the deposition of the last king mérovingien Childéric III. The ceremony of sacrament is renewed in 754.
Berthe is very active during the reign of her husband, whom she advises and accompanies in her warlike forwardings, however a few years later Pépin the Brief plans to repudiate it for nonknown reasons, but the pope opposes it.
With died of Pip, in 768, it makes assemble on the throne its two sons Charles and Carloman, without give up the capacity completely to them and keeps a great influence on them. It arranges in particular the marriage of Charles with Désirée of Lombardy in 770, he will repudiate it when he enters in war against his father-in-law to seize his States.
With died Carloman, in 771, Charles seizes his States, draws aside his/her mother, who leaves Aachen where it resides and withdraws itself with Thionville. She dies in anonymity on April 23rd, 783 (4 of the nuns from July) with Choisy-with-Vat close to Compiegne.
Berthe inspired to the Trouvère Adenet the King, who writes in 1270 Li Roumans de Berte aus grans black and white . In this poem in Alexandrine S, it is question of a susbstitution at the time of the marriage of Pip, which is misled and marries a false queen, surprisingly resembling its promised Berte, princess of Hungary. The latter is finally recognized thanks to the length of her feet.
