Berthoud

Geography

The town of Berthoud is located at the entry of the valley of the Emmental, cradle of the cheese éponyme.

History

The city probably owes its foundation to the duke Conrad of Zaehringen which set up in XIIe century a fortress intended to control the entry of Emmental. To the extinction of the Zaehringen, Berthoud passed in 1218 to the Kybourg. In 1384, Bern acquired the city at the end of the Guerre of Berthoud and installed its baillifs with the castle until in 1798.
