Berthold Schwartz

Berthold Schwartz (towards 1318 - towards 1384) was a Moine franciscain and German chemist. Its true name was Berthold von Lützelstetten.

Following the voyage of Marco Polo, of return to Venice in 1318, which mentioned the use of the black Poudre by the Eastern ones for the Fireworks, Berthold Schwartz is regarded by the popular legend as that which redécouvrit secrecies of the black Poudre in occident. According to other sources, the introduction of the blasting powder in Occident should be allotted to Roger Bacon.

A statue was high to him with Freiburg-in-Brisgau.
