Geography

The ground of the commune includes/understands:

of the alluvia of boggy nature in the valley of the Luce.
of red diluvium to the bottom of the slopes since the surroundings of the school (town hall) until the limit of the territory towards Thézy-Glimont.
of chalk towards the slopes i.e. most of the territory.
at the top of clay (silt of the plates of the Eocene period ).

Valley of Luce (small river which separates Berteaucourt from Thennes) and affluent of the Avre are very narrow. The culminating altitude of the commune reaches 105 meters and the point low, on the edges of the Luce to approximately 34 meters.

History

The history of Berteaucourt-lès-Thennes is very closely related to that of Thennes.

There does not remain any trace of the Gallic time nor of the Roman occupation . One discovered however on the territory of the axes of the prehistoric time.

Berteaucourt date undoubtedly of the time Mérovingienne, but was joined together very a long time with Thennes. One does not know a particular lord to him before the 16th century. All makes it possible to suppose that Berteaucourt and Thennes suffered from the devastations of the Normands and of the Guerre One hundred Year old however there is no precise document on this subject. Berteaucourt could not escape the consequences from the wars from the 17th century with the Spanish , nor the misery which reigned in the area for all this period and the 18th century.

Before the Révolution Berteaucourt belonged to election of Montdidier and raised of the Bailliage of Amiens. There is no memory of the period of the French revolution.

The country saw the Cosaques in 1814 - 1815.

During the Guerre of 1870 during the German invasion the village of Berteaucourt was extremely tested. The November 27th 1870 the country was between two fires: the French in north, the German S in the south, one fought until in the streets of the village, of the fires took place.

During the War of 1914-1918, being near the frontline, the village was largely destroyed, all constructions were touched, as well as the cemetery. The German attack of the March 21st 1918 on the face Saint-Quentin - Fère had succeeded in creating a 80 depth km pocket in the Anglo-French face. This one was completely broken between the rivers Avre and Luce. The March 27th 1918, the general Foch, commander-in-chief of the allied troops, sent reinforcements and charged the 1st French Army with the general Debeney extending its face and with maintaining at all costs the connection with the English army of the general Gough which moved back towards Villers-Bretonneux and Amiens. The order was thus given to the French to resist until death on the plate of Santerre. The general Canadian Seely, former minister Canadian for the war, had its headquarters to Berteaucourt-lès-Thennes in March 1918. The August 8th 1918, the French troops started from Thennes and Berteaucourt-lès-Thennes counter-attacked in direction of Villers-with-Maples.
