Bernicie

The Bernicie (brittonic Brynaich or Bryneich ) was a kingdom of the Angles in septentrional England, during the VIème and VIIème centuries of the Christian era. It amalgamated later with the kingdom of Deira to form the kingdom of Northumbrie.

Its territory would have extended since the the Tyne towards north, reaching finally the Firth off Forth. Its Western border gradually extended, corrosive on the kingdoms of Celtic language (see cambrien) Rheged, Gododdin and Dunbarton. The principal royal residence was with Bamburgh, close to the island of Lindisfarne, which became the seat of a évêché.

Kings de Bernicie

The origins of the kingdom are obscure, and nothing proves that the kings Esa and Eoppa really existed. The first king who appears in annals is Ida, into 547. It is advisable however to regard these dates as approximate, so much the sources are vague, corrupted and sometimes contradictory.

The kingdom thus made up is known under the name of Northumbrie. When York fell to the hands from the Danish in 867, Bernicie was controlled, at least partly by Earl de Bamburgh, more or less independent, until in 927, date on which it was subjected and was integrated into the kingdom of England.
