Bernardino Machado
Bernardino Machado (complete name: Bernardino Luís Machado Guimarães) is a Portuguese politician (1851, Rio de Janeiro - 1944, Oporto). It was President of the Republic of Portugal (1915-1917 and 1925-1926).
Course
Born in Rio de Janeiro from a father resulting from the Immigration Portuguese (the future baron de Joane, Antonio Luis Machado Guimarães) and from a mother originating in the aristocracy " coloniale" state of the Paraná (Praxedes Sousa Ribeiro), Bernardino Machado received an education very neat, and opened on humanistic values, first of all with the Brésil then with the Portugal.Installed with his parents in the North of Portugal (Joane, Villa Nova de Famalicao) the future President carries out brilliant studies with the Université of Coimbra, of which he will become later an eminent professor.
Member of Parliament, Minister for Labor public (1893), first of all faithful to the Monarchy, it joins himself the Republicans and takes share with the academic crisis of 1907. He is isolated University.
At the time of the fall of monarchy and establishment of the Portuguese Republic on October 10th, 1910, he becomes Foreign Minister of the provisional government, then President of the council. In 1912, it is sent as ambassador to Brazil. Shortly after its return, it is elected President of the Republic in 1915, and it is under its presidency that the Portugal will be brought to take share with the First World War. It is reversed in 1917 by a Coup d'etat fomented by the General Sidónio Pais.
Again President of the council in 1923, it is re-elected President of the republic in 1925, but dice the following year the military coup d'etat of May 28th, 1926 draws aside it from the Presidency, before sending it in exile, in particular in France.
Following the invasion of France in 1940, it is authorized to return to Portugal where it dies in 1944 under house arrest.
Bernardino Machado is the author of many works on pedagogy, on the school, vocational training, in particular female, on the Université.
Freemason, Bernardino Machado was Large-Master of the Great East of Portugal (the Great unified Lusitain East).
