Bernard of Chartres

Bernard of Chartres is a Philosophe Plato ician of the 12th century (about 1130-1160).

Humanistic and philosopher, having had a fundamental role in the School of Chartres. It is first of all influenced by Boèce, of which it adapts the platonism. It then sticks to reconcile the thought of Plato with that of Aristote, which will make of him the largest thinker aristotelician and Platonic of the 12th century.

It is known in particular for the sentence “ We are like dwarves perched on shoulders of giants (the Old ones), so that we can see more things and more distant than the latter did not see any. And that, not because our sight would be powerful or our advantageous size, but because we are carried and raised by the high stature of the giants. ”.

His/her brother, Thierry of Chartres, is also one of the philosophers of the School of Chartres.

A recent study of Guillotel showed that Bernard of Chartres was also bishop of Quimper under the name of Bernard de Moelan. It would have written there the Vitae of Saint Corentin and Saint Ronan.
