Bernard Villemot

Bernard Villemot is a known French poster artist for his posters engaged like the Red Cross . He was born the September 20th 1911 with Trouville-on-Sea (Apple-brandy) and died in 1989.

Biography

He is the son of the draftsman and humorist Jean Villemot. After studies with the Academy Julian, it is registered at the school Paul Colin in the years 1932-1934.

Its first poster goes back to 1933, posts for the General police station with Education directed by Jean Borotra. In the years of post-war period, in 1945-1946, it carries out many posters for the Red Cross, the Days of the Free French Army, like for the French Mutual aid.

While continuing to work for the public authorities, it realizes into 1947-1948 its first commercial posters, in particular for Air France, thanks to the Baille Brothers who have just created their advertizing agency. In 1949, it shares an exposure with Raymond Savignac to the Gallery of the Art schools. He collaborates with Jean Laurance, chief of publicity of Gaumont, UGC and Pathé, by carrying out posters of cinema: We all are of the assassins of Cayatte, then the Head against the walls of Franju in 1959. An accessory and long collaboration with Jean Davray for the mark Orangina will follow. It creates a image-symbol which will become the logo of the universally recognized mark.

1965 sign the beginning of its collaboration with the Bally Shoes and for Perrier. In connection with the posters Perrier, he says himself influenced by his Masters Paul Colin, Leonetto Cappiello and Cassandre. He becomes professor at the University of decorative arts and president of graphic Alliance.

In the years 1970-1980, it will be, just like Savignac, rejetté by the advertizing medium. “Us other poster artists, we were obliged to take the maquis. The country was occupied by the armies of marketing. ”

Its birthplace, Trouville-on-Sea, devoted a retrospective exposure in 1977 to him. Another retrospective exposure took place in 1982 at the National library of France (BNF) in Paris.
