Bernard Panafieu

Bernard Louis Auguste Cardinal Panafieu is a French man of the church, which occupied in particular the load of metropolitan Archevêque of Marseilles.

  • auxiliary Bishop of Wild Mgr (Diocese of Annecy) (1974-1978);
  • Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence (1978-1994);
  • Archbishop coadjutor of Marseilles (1994-1995)
  • Archbishop of Marseilles (1995-2006, highly skilled since)

The new cutting of the ecclesiastical provinces in France in 2002 made of Marseilles a metropolitan archdiocese, with the head of the province gathering Aix-Arles (archdiocese), Avignon (archdiocese), Frejus-Toulon, Nice, Ajaccio, Digne, Gap). Marseilles depended before directly on the Holy See and not on the archdiocese of Aix and Arles, hitherto metropolitan of the province. On this occasion, Mgr Panafieu became metropolitan archbishop.

  • on October 21st, 2003 it is created cardinal by the Pope Jean-Paul II and for this reason takes share with the Conclave of 2005.
