Bernard Haitink

Bernard Johan Hermann Haitink is a Leader Dutch, born the March 4th 1929 with Amsterdam, more particularly famous for its interpretations of Gustav Mahler, Anton Bruckner, Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven, Dmitri Chostakovitch and Franz Liszt. Its style, in the line of Willem Mengelberg, is especially noticed for its care of the details and its not very common strength of character.

First steps

He studies initially the Violon with the conservatory of Amsterdam, then the direction of Orchestre near Felix Hupka. He becomes violonist of the Symphony orchestra of the Radio Dutchwoman, and at the same time, takes lessons near the leader Ferdinand Leitner, which entrusts to him in 1955 the post of second leader of the orchestra of the Union of the radios Dutchwomen.

The first successes

In 1961, it is the dedication: Bernard Haïtink succeeds Eduard van Beinum with the head of the Orchestre of Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, where it will remain during 27 years. In 1967, he becomes also the main leader of the Philharmonic orchestra of London, and this until 1979.

The years operated

In 1972, Haitink starts to pay its attention on the opera. It becomes thus in 1978 the director muscial of the Festival of Glyndebourne, station which it will occupy until in 1988. It directs the Marriages of Figaro of Mozart to the Festival of Easter of Salzburg 1991. Then he is musical director of the Royal Opera House until in 2002.

World recognition

From 1994 to 1999, Bernard Haitink is musical director of the Orchestre of the Youth of the European Union. From August 2002 at 2004, Bernard Haitink is director of the Staatskapelle of Dresden. In 2006, it agrees to become principal chief of the Symphony orchestra of Chicago at the sides of Pierre Boulez (highly skilled chief) in waiting of the nomination of a new musical director. In-outside this station, it currently holds honorary positions with the Philharmonic orchestra of Berlin (honorary member), with the Symphony orchestra of Chicago (chief highly skilled) and with the royal Orchestra of Concertgebouw of Amsterdam (honorary chief). Since the beginning of the years 2000, it regularly directs the Symphony orchestra of London.

Bernard Haitink carried out many recordings at Decca, EMI, and Philips, in particular the ten Symphonie S of Bruckner, the fifteen symphonies of Chostakovitch, the Ballet S of Stravinski, the integral of the Symphonie S of Brahms and Mahler with the Orchestre of Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, as well as many other works with the Philharmonic orchestra of Berlin, the Philharmonic orchestra of Vienna, the Symphony orchestra of Boston, the Symphony orchestra of Bavarian Broadcasting and the National orchestra of France. He has just recorded with the Symphony orchestra of London an integral of the symphonies of Beethoven, in concert, greeted by the critic.

Bernard Haitink is in particular Chevalier honorary of the Ordre of the British Empire since 1977, Commandeur of the order Orange Nassau, and received in 2003 a Grammy for his interpretation of the opera Jenůfa of Janáček.
