Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is a zone of the Atlantic Ocean of 3,9 million km delimited by the archipelago of the Bermuda, the east coast of the Florida and the island of Puerto Rico. According to the legend, it was the theater of a great number of disappearances of Navire S and Aéronef S.

History

Inspired by several articles published by various magazines in the Years 1950, name “Bermuda Triangle” is allocated to the journalist Vincent Gaddis in an article of the magazine Argosy in 1964: The Deadly Bermuda shorts Triangle .

The modern history of the Bermuda Triangle starts with the disappearance of the Pickering , an American boat, about 1801. Then, in the order, disappeared: In 1780, the General one Spoil. Professor Wayne Meshejian declared that the meteorological satellite of the National Océanographic Administration fell systematically broken down each time it passed above the Bermuda Triangle: “A force that we do not know, specified it, prevents the passage of information”.

The legend became extensive with the disappearance of a flotilla of five hunters bomber S the December 5th 1945 off Florida, known under the name of Vol 19 . At the end of one hour of flight, the base of Fort Lauderdale accepted a call of the lieutenant announcing to them that they were lost. A seaplane, party with their research, did not return either.

From 1945 with 1975, forty planes and about fifty boats would have disappeared without launching distress call.

Attempts at explanation

Among the scientific assumptions, one often called upon magnetic disturbances and “oceanic flatulences”, that is to say underwater emissions of a highly flammable gas, the Méthane which strongly decrease the density of water until causing a loss of buoyancy (see Hydrate of methane). Exit of the decomposition of organic elements like oil and the coal, compressed by the great depth and the very low temperature of the environment, released during the creation of faults by the tectonic activity. One finds at sea other layers important north where certain drilling platforms, ships and aircraft were absorbed or pulverized by the same phenomenon.

The number of disappearances reported is not particularly high if one takes account of the following factors:

  • surface (nearly 4 million km).
  • importance of the sea traffic in this zone.
  • importance of the layers of methane hydrate and the tectonic activity of the area.
  • weather conditions, chaotic and unforeseeable under these latitudes.
Several alleged shipwrecks appeared simple mystifications thereafter. For some, the mystery remains to be cleared up. For others, there is no mystery, except perhaps the propagation of the legend on the basis of so mean fact.

Documentary diffused in 2003 by the chain National Geographic does not mention a particular anomaly measured in this zone, except a light reduction in the terrestrial magnetic field. He recalls on the other hand that one observes there the most violent storms of the sphere, with sometimes of the Vagues scélérates of eight meters and more top. With regard to the flight 19 , it is the assumption of an error of navigation of the instructor, trained in the Keys and having confused the topography of the areas flown over with those at the point to believe that its magnetic compass was put out of order, which is retained like most probable, their low fuel reserves being responsible for the loss of the flotilla, found by chance in 2000.

The insurance companies, as for them, do not judge useful to date (2006) to raise their premiums for the ships or planes brought to cross this zone.
