Berliner Zeitung

Founded with East Berlin, the Berliner Zeitung is today the principal regional newspaper Berlin ois, in competition with the Berliner Morgenpost and Der Tagesspiegel. It belongs to Gruner + Jahr (group Bertelsmann).

History

Created in 1945 of the east coast of Berlin, the Berliner Zeitung is subordinated to SED, dominant party of GDR. With a pulling of 345.000 daily specimens, the newspaper of the East-German capital is not the central body of the SED but is governed by the monopoly of the press founded in the country.

In 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the daily newspaper is repurchased by Gruner + Jahr and the British Robert Maxwell. Some time later, Gruner + Jahr becomes sole owner of the newspaper which it starts again with high expenses by new formula and new model in 1997.

Following the financial problems of the group Bertelsmann, an attempt at repurchase by the group Holtzbrinck takes place. This one is however prohibited raions some of the dominant position of the purchaser on the market Berlinois, Holtzbrinck being already the owner of the Berliner daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel .

The Berliner Zeitung is defined as a newspaper “of the East and West” and declares “young person, modern and dynamic” with ambitions on the unit of the German territory . In 2003, the newspaper reaches a pulling of 207.800 specimens and an assistantship of 468.000 people.
