Berlaimont is a common French, located in the department of the Northern and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Its inhabitants is called Berlaimontois.
Geography
Berlaimont is surrounded of the villages of: Sassegnies, Aulnoye-Aymeries, Bridge-on-Sambre, Covering, Locquignol and of the Forest of Mormal.Hydrography: The Sambre and the brook of Arbreux.
History
The Nerviens left traces to Bavay, in Belgium in the the Brabant, with Cambrai, in the the Scheldt, old the Comté of Hainaut, with the Netherlands and with Tournai.
- -57 : César and 7 Roman legions beats the Nerviens enters Bridge-on-Sambre and Hautmont. Bavay is selected like capital of the city of Nerviens. Bavay lost its functions with the Cambric profit. - 1850 : Construction of a house school of boys. The school of the girls is installed in a house belonging to the factory which rents it with the commune.
- 1857 : To the General advice it is proposed that Maubeuge becomes sub-prefecture because of its population, its industrial development and its position on Sambre. The mayor of Berlaimont, Marie Paul, proposes Berlaimont like sub-prefecture, the city being the center of the district, located on the Sambre and having a line of Railroad. Its assets are the proximity of the forest of Mormal, of the ground, a sugar refinery, Distillerie S and other industrial plants. The magistrate complains, moreover, never to have had the visit neither of the prefect, nor of the sub-prefect in 40 years of municipal management.
- 1858 : Industry is represented by a sugar refinery, 2 building sites of boats, 3 Brasserie S, 2 nail factories, 3 forging mills of marshal, a Water mill with flour, a Windmill, 2 factories of potteries, 2 marble-mason's yards, a Tannerie, a stone quarry and a sand pit.
- 1871 : The Prussian having invaded France by the East, Berlaimont will not be a zone of combat. It does not seem that there was occupation of the foreign troops. Russian riders would have remained in Maubeuge.
- 1873 : Berlaimont counts 2 755 inhabitants
- 1939: Content with the success of the Agreements of Munich in favor of peace, Berlaimontois rename the place of the Town hall of the name of the French and English negotiators: Daladier and Chamberlain. During the invasion, German soldiers will take pleasure to destroy it.
- May 18th 1940: The units of recognition of 8th and 5th Panzers Divisions cross the city and run up against the 4th regiment of cuirassiers in the forest of Mormal.
- 1944 : Fights between resistant and German troop in retirement. The church is burnt. The Germans in retirement, fire an incendiary bomb in the bell-tower where the resistant ones had installed a station of combat.
- 2002 : Berlaimont, altitude average 141 m, has a surface of 1 319 hectares including 86 on the timbered surface, with its hamlets: Great career, Sarsbarras and black Tête. The declining population is of 3 398 inhabitants (3 228 without the double accounts according to figures INSEE in 1999).
