Berenger of Turns
Bérenger of Turns (born in 998 with Tours - died in 1088) was a theologist French of the Moyen-âge, whose ideas were condemned for Hérésie by the council of Turns of 1050, on the occasion of which they were refuted by Abbon de Fleury.
Biography
Raise Fulbert of Chartres, Bérenger of Turns is named in 1030 scholastic or Master of a school in his birthplace, and becomes in 1039, Chanoine Laïc of the Cathédrale of Angers, whose bishop Eusèbe Brunon is his friend.
He occupies this station until in 1060 when the count d' Anjou Geoffroy II '' Martel '' prohibits the access to the city to him. Grammairien and dialectician, his teaching is some time much success. Its eucharistic doctrines, founded on a reading of Ratramne which it confuses with Jean Scot Erigène, blame the Transsubstantiation and eucharistic realism such as its contemporaries following Paschase Radbert include/understand it.
Its teaching involves a eucharistic controversy with Adalman, écolâtre of Liege, Abbon de Fleury and Lanfranc. Denounced like heretic in 1050 with the council of Turns, after he is condemned by the Pape Leon IX, because he denied the real presence. He is again condemned thereafter by the councils of Rome and Vercueil and constrained in 1059 to profess a formula of eucharistic faith written by Humbert de Moyenmoûtier.
Condemned by step less than fourteen councils, it ratifies a new profession of faith in 1079 with the council of Lateran. Exiled on the Island Saint-Like at the request of the pope Gregoire VII, he dies in peace with the Church at the 90 years age.
The majority of its works are lost; what remainder is with:
- writings of Lanfranc (archbishop of Canterbury)
- in the Collections of Luc d' Achery and Dom Martenne.
In 1777, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing found with Wolfenbüttel its Défense against Lanfranc or Of crowned Coena , like some other writings, which were published by François Vischer, Berlin, 1834.
Hans Friedrich Sudendorf published in Hamburg, in 1850, a collection of its Lettres .
