Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgaden is a German city, located in the the Bavarian Alps .

It is located at the extreme south-east of Germany and Bavaria, to 30 km in the south of Salzburg (Austria).

Important places and monuments

  • In the south of the city is the 3rd mountain of Germany by its height: the mount Watzmann (2713 m).
  • the mountain of Kehlstein (1835 m), known for the “eyrie” ( Kehlsteinhaus ) placed at its top. The eyrie was built like gift for the 50 years of Adolf Hitler, at the conclusion of the war, it was left intact. It is accessible by a pedestrian tunnel, then by an elevator of time going up in the rock on 135 Mr.
The road arriving at the tunnel is not more accessible than in the special buses only one takes in Obersalzberg.
  • Below Kehlstein, is the plate of the Obersalzberg where Adolf Hitler had established its districts of summer with barracks, its residence of the Berghof including/understanding a bunker. There was also a hotel where the admirors of the dictator could come for one Mark per night. All these installations were destroyed by bombardments; there remained only the bunker.
During the time of the cold war, the American forces settled with the same site. Today, a very important information center on the war and the Nazi regime exist; it shelters the access to the bunker which one can also visit.
  • Great natural curiosity: the lake Königssee which one traverses in electric boat. One visits there the church of Sankt Bartholomä and at the end of a lake, a footpath reaches another lake, Obersee.
  • a great attraction: the saltworks ( Salzbergwerk ) with a tourist course energy of the preparing in behavior of minor, the small train, tobogans of wood, the crossing of the underground lake salted in the boat.
