Berau

Berau is a kabupaten (department) of the province Indonesia nne of Eastern Kalimantan in the island of Borneo. Its surface is of 32.700 km ² and its population of approximately 75.000 inhabitants.

The principal rivers are Segah and Kelai.

History

Berau was formerly the seat of two principalities, Gunung Tabur on Segah and Sambaliung on Kelai.

Environment and tourism

More than 80 species of trees of Berau are registered as threatened on the list of World Conservation Union (IUCN).

The gulf of Berau, which belongs to the Mer of Célèbes, is located on an important road of migration of marine mammals.

The coral barrier of Berau, located at 60 kilometers at broad of the peninsula of Berau, is regarded as one of the most important marine sites of Indonesia.

The islands Derawan belong to a marine park.

The palate of Gunung Tabur is today a museum containing various royal objects of which a throne, as well as a gun and ceramics found in the forest around.

The town of Berau is connected by a daily flight in CASA -212 of the company Dirgantara Air Service with Balikpapan, the economic center of Eastern Kalimantan.
